Posters For Events
Creating posters for events hosted by the Latin American Student Association on my university campus has been a valuable way for me to explore a variety of design concepts. It has allowed me to apply my graphic design skills in a practical setting while experimenting with different tools and techniques. Through this process, I have learned how to incorporate AI, create my own illustrations, and use platforms with ready-made design elements. I have also strengthened my understanding of color theory, color palettes, layout, and the importance of visual hierarchy and placement.
It is important to note that some of these posters are among the first I created, so you may notice that my margins are not fully developed in earlier work.
Self-Advocacy & Coping Event
This is one of my most recent posters. I chose to keep the design and layout simple in order to clearly communicate the message, as it addressed a serious topic and required straightforward, accessible information.
I have also been learning about ADA accessibility, as guidelines have become more strict. I ran this poster through Adobe Acrobat to add alt text since it was also going to be posted online.
Mechanical Bull Event
This poster was also designed in Canva. While templates are available, they can be fully customized, and using a premade template does not mean you are limited to its original design. In this case, I selected a template but ended up modifying it extensively and moving away from it entirely. I had to get creative in how I used the provided elements.
As you can see, I positioned the bull head to overlap the text, creating a more dynamic, outward-facing effect. I also really liked how the glowing font helped emphasize the event name. The remaining information was kept in a simple yellow tone to maintain consistency and visually connect it to the rest of the design.
Paint and Sip Event
In this poster, I decided to apply what I had been practicing in my classes, which was using AI. This piece was definitely more challenging because it often produced merged and distorted images. Eventually, I was able to generate an outcome that I was satisfied with.
To make the text stand out, I lowered the opacity of the background and added light background shapes behind the other words to improve readability and visual contrast.
Mariachi Band Event
This is one of my personal favorites because of how well it represents Hispanic culture. I did use Canva to create this poster. While Canva is sometimes viewed negatively, I see it as another valuable tool for graphic designers when used intentionally and skillfully. There are many features within Canva that are useful for design work, and not everything is limited to premade templates—you can also build compositions from scratch.
